You can normally avoid asking someone to be your girlfriend altogether, by just asking them if they want to catch a movie or whatever, and then at the end being like "This was fun, we should do this again sometime" and then keep doing it and like ask them to dinner somewhere romantic and then kiss them blah blah blah

However, this can be a pretty quick route to the friendzone, which is why dinner somewhere romantic is probably a good idea.
