I am proud to unveil the new and much more polished map of Arventia, with many more locations and looking a great deal better than the hand drawn original.

Chapter 7: Lords And What They Do

Many have heard the term 'lord' thrown about outside Arventia, however seldom few actually know what the role entails, what their responsibilities are, and just exactly who the lords are, this chapter aims to answer these questions.

The first lordship system was officially begun in Aethris by Mornstein Califrax, however, the system was an unofficial part of life in the city of Anundas until year 1080 when Belinda Blackwash the sixth split the leadership between Anundas and Enthis, giving each it's own territory. To this day only the cities of Anundas, Vrede, Enthis, Kalvor, and Aethris have an established lord system, however there are similar titles that hold similar political weight on the Isles of Are, Dononki, and Endissya, respectively known as Guardian, Chief Don, and King/Queen.

To put it simply, a lord in every city besides Vrede is an inherited title gifted to the child (or sometimes children) of the previous lord. A lord has absolute power within their city and is therefore the very top of the hierarchy of power in their city, a lord is able to make new laws and erase old laws without petition or consultation of others, however many lords often run through the ordinary proceed of having laws voted on, unless it is in their interests for it not to be disputed. This system may seem corrupt, however the lordship system has came to realise that for the sake of their own survival, the people must be pleased, otherwise they may be assassinated or a coup may be staged, so corruption is surprisingly uncommon among lords.

A lord does have certain responsibilities that they are unable to avoid due to them being unable to be made by those with less authority, however. A lord is the only member of a nation which may declare war upon another nation, not even those with privileges entailing the command of an entire nation's army may officially send out a declaration of war. Lords are the only ones who may conduct what is known as an 'Ethics Trial', a proceed where the ruling of the lord may overturn any previous court decision, precedent, and is held without a jury, these are very few and far between, however sometimes lords may have to judge these where depending on the lord's opinion, the sentence can be incredibly hard or relatively soft. Lords are also currently the only people with access to diplomatic summits in the city of Vrede, no other diplomats are allowed within the halls until the summit is complete, minor summits do see lords bringing others.

As mentioned before, there are lords for each of the five major cities and these people are as follows:

Aethris

Edward Califrax

Edward Califrax is a man who as a young child was always taught to be prepared for war, even in times of peace, and lived his entire life up to the age of 84 without a single battle to his name, despite taking up command of the military and training in a variety of weapons, heavy to light until he could hardly lift them off the ground with his age. During his 'prime' at the age of 28 he was able to fight off one hundred armed soldiers barehanded, or so he claims. He has two heirs whom he had with his wife, Sandra Califrax and consistently fears for the future of his city due to the interest in only athletics for his eldest, Titus Califrax, and interest only in being promiscuous from his younger son, Dudley Califrax.

Anundas

Belinda Blackwash The Eighteenth

At age six Belinda begun her lessons under Tamamo No Mae to prepare her for lordship, though it was hypothesised she would not need to go intoo lordship for hundreds of years due to the beginning of a golden age of Anundas by her Mother ,Belinda The Seventeenth, however her lordship was begun at the young age of eighteen when her mother abdicated and personally took on advising and tutoring her daughter. Belinda Blackwash The Eighteenth is an echidna, a breed of lamia whose inherent magical essence is much greater than ordinary lamia, unlike her mother she bears blonde hair and pale white skin due to genetic randomisation on the behalf of her family's genes changing immensely with every generation.

Kalvor

Alina Niles

While Alina Niles currently possesses no lord privileges until she comes of age she is still currently counted as a lord, despite having a regent watch over Kalvor she actively takes part in affairs of state. Alina Niles at the age of eight trained under Tamamo No Mae in magic until age fourteen, Where she came out almost as strong as the kitsune lord herself. Alina has been kidnapped a record number of times -57 to be exact- due to how young she is, many people from Kalvor and Amon Kul believe she may be weak, however her power over Earth and Water is almost unrivaled in Arventia, as well as possessing an intellect that many lords often characteristically have, well beyond her years.

Enthis

Dallas and Nerva Naegis

While many lords in the past have married siblings to keep a bloodline pure, these twin sisters broke two records for being firstly the first same-sex lord couple as well as the first mirror-twin lord couple to marry. These two lamia lords seen an early debut into lordship at eighteen when their father abdicated in order to go with his wife on a very long holiday, to say they live on the life of luxury but still make contribution is an understatement; Dallas herself has multiple inventions and discoveries to her name, including but not limited to: Trinities, Code Empress and Code Queen, and the metal Naegentium. Nerva is a high-profile activist for justice in the legal system who frequently takes the head in trials herself.

Vrede

Tamamo No Mae and Brennos The Mighty

Tamamo No Mae is a mysterious person who has been in history for perhaps longer than history has been recorded in Arventia, she is a kitsune with a total of nine tails who is generally amicable in all circumstances, she has been the candidate for anthro representative lord for Vrede the past ten elections and has won every time due to presumably her popularity. Brennos The Mighty is the human representative who, ever since he was elected has never been seen out of The Lord's Manor, in fact he was last seen several years ago, only letters have been sent out to notify people of the decisions he makes.

And now you know all about lords, and their names too, so now you can wow your friends with all the knowledge of the most powerful people in Arventia and not be caught out if you meet one of them.
