A Ceilidh (pronounced 'Kayley') is a traditional Gaelic thing. They are fairly common in Scotland for celebrations.
Basically you get a Ceilidh band (who usually play traditional reels and such) and then you do a dance to it. Such as the Military Two-step, the Dashing White Seargent, Strip the Willow, the Gay Gordons (Gay meaning happy rather than homosexual) and the Canadian Barn Dance. There must be hundreds of dances.
In school we were taught some of them. Although the band generally has a call guy who goes through the dance and explains it before the song.
I remember thinking it was lame, but it's actually the most fun you can have at a party, and is a great ice breaker with strangers.
If you do anything this year, go to a ceilidh!
