I went into a nether portal, died and the spawnpoint is above lava :P

We're working on it, but for now nothing can be done. I suggest downgrading to 1.7.10, though, because iirc that fixes some bugs in 1.7.9 and is compatible with the server.

Soon enough, there'll be some changes to the server for better protection of property and maybe a new plug-in that'll add to the immersion. Expect it!
