What's this you may ask? A fire ant raft, it is. The worker ants make up the bottom while the soldier ants scurry around on top. They make rafts like these in response to flooding.

Bonus story: The cafeteria food that I paid hundreds for in advance for this semester gives me and others gastrointestinal distress. I'm unsure if the increased cost of toilet paper will offset any money I could save by eating it rather than eating out.

The Pistol Shrimp is the noisiest animal in the ocean. These things only range from a couple centimeters to a few inches long, but are capable of making sounds up to 280 decibels, more than 100 decibels louder than a space shuttle launch. It does this by quickly opening and closing it's claw, which creates a tiny bubble that lasts for a tiny period of time, but heats up to more than 8000 degrees Farenheit. The bubble is so hot it actually emits light before popping. Needless to say, this is a very powerful weapon and is the shrimp's primary method of getting food (stunning/killing other marine life in this manner).
