If there are few good shells around, hermit crabs will group together and pull the shell off an unfavorable member of the group (hermit crabs are actually very social). They then form a line, with the biggest crab giving his shell to the next biggest etc. This means that the one whose shell was stolen gets the smallest (and least protective) shell of all,
