I want there to be no rampant early advertising for a holiday which bankrupts parents.

quite inaccurate. First recorded Christmas celebration on the 25th was in the Roman Empire in 336 AD during the rule of Emperor Constantine, being the first Christian Emperor. A couple years later, Pope Julius I declared Jesus' birthday would be celebrated on that day instead of during the summer.
And the concept of Christmas was adopted from the pagan Russians, an evolution of society supporting each other during the harsh, cold winters where everyone would work together to keep everyone alive durig festival meals when the days were the shortest and the weather was the coldest. dem ruskis celebrated it far before jesus or the Roman empire to my knowledge and shaped Germanic and Britannic and Nordic celebrations of the winter solstice.
