Despite misconception, there are far more than 5 senses of the human body. Depending on which medical works you read, the number of senses can go all the way up to 21, but for now I'd like to tell you people about the 9 senses. Lets just buzz through the first five.
Sight: Sight is the human body's ability of detecting the electromagnetic waves in front and around the proximity of the eyes. The eyes send the data to the brain and the brain deciphers it as what we call, "sight."
Smell: Regarded as a "chemical" sense, when one breathes through the nose, there are things called olfactory receptors that bind to specific and unique molecular characteristics of the air that is being pulled into the lungs. The brain then systematically categorizes the different smells and with the aid of the eyes and/or ears, can match up with a smell to a specific items.
Taste: Another chemical sense, when anything is placed onto the tongue, there are taste buds present that send messages to the brain about specific items that are in contact with the tongue. The four main categories are sweet, salty, bitter, and sour.
Hearing: The sense of the perception of sound, caused by sound waves hitting and vibrating tiny fibers within the inner ear. They vibrate differently when it comes to the characteristics of the sound waves, for example if sound is loud, quiet, thick, thin, clear or crackly as well as other attributes. It is one of senses that helps the body figure out overall perception of pressure.
Touch: Having to do with the nerves within the human body, touch is one of the senses that helps he body have an overall perception of pressure. The sense of touch mostly happens outside of the body.
Equilibrioception: The sense of balance and/or acceleration. This sense tells your body how fast you are going and how organized your movements are. Though there are many senses of the body that aid in analyzing the body's balance, as well as physical body parts, such as your toes, the part of the body that is mostly regarded for the sense of balance is the cavities in your ears that are filled with fluids.
Proprioception: Often regarded as the spiritual sense, proprioception is the body's awareness of the unity and difference of the consciousness and the body. Some people with severe depression may undergo the loss of the sense of proprioception, for they lose touch within themselves and as their mental health deteriorates, they do not feel "right". They do not feel a unity within their body and they do not feel like the body they have is right or the mind they have is right, and sometimes they may feel both. Though it is rare, some people with severe depression never regain the sense of proprioception.
Nociception: Sometimes seen as a branch under the sense of touch, nocicpetion is the sense of one's well being within the body and the nerves. It is simply the non-concious perception of the nerve and/or tissue damage.
Thermoception: Another "branch" under touch, thermoception is the sense of heat and the absence of heat. It's one thing to feel wind brush your body, but having the ability to identify the heat or absence of heat is a completely different thing.
