IIRC he actually started as an aardvark with a nose and everything (in a book series)... They even had a storyline where he disliked his nose but eventually came to accept it... Then, when the show started, they got rid of it, anyways
My memory's a bit spotty (and I'm too lazy to look it up), but it was something like that...

So the moral of Arthur is that if you accept a part of yourself that you dislike, that entire part of your body will magically disappear. Seems legit.
