Anime is Japanese cartoons basically.
Not all anime is for children, actually most anime is rated 13+ or 17+.

The reason some people prefer anime over live action shows are because:
1. Anime characters seem more into character than real life because they are created with more emotion than can be shown by even our best actors. (other than heath ledger in the dark knight)
2. The are can range anywhere from simple to very nicely drawn out and some people enjoy that art.
3. The story lines of some of these such as Death note and Full Metal Alchemist, are very well written and compared to a live action show that is in the same genre, the Anime ones are far superior.

The genres of anime is very large. Some good anime for each Genre will be listed below. If you wanted to watch an anime to see if you like it, then you should watch these first.
Action- Full Metal Alchemist - Naruto - Bleach - Hellsing
Adventure- Pokemon
Comedy- Shuffle!
Demons- Inuyasha
Drama- NANA
Ecchi- ( I wont put in one for this category because its more of the 17+)
Fantasy- Zoids
Game- Bakugan - Hikaru no Go - Yu-Gi-Oh
Harem- Love Hina ( one of my fav animes)
Historical- Rurouni Kenshin - Samurai Champloo
Horror- Monster
Kids- Digimon - Pokemon - ect.
Love-Romance- Kimi ni todoke - Love Hina - Shuffle! - Tenchi Muyo - Fruits basket - and many more.
Magic- Mahou Sensei Negima!
Martial Arts- Samurai Jack - Dragon Ball Z
Mecha- Full Metal Alchemist - Zoids - Chobits
Military- Full Metal Alchemist - Ghost in the Shell
Music- La Corda D'Oro ~primo passo~
Mystery- Ghost Hunt
Psychological- Monster- Ghost in the Shell
Samurai- Samurai Jack - Rurouni Kenshin - Samurai Champloo
School- Love Hina- Shuffle! - Kimi ni todoke - Negima - Ah! My Godess
Sci-Fi- Outlaw Star - Trigun - Tenchi Muyo
