Chapter 6
Oakpaw gave a sigh. He didn't mean to snap at her. He just looked down at the ground. Then Oakpaw looked up. He saw Deafire still leading the patrol, and Tawnycloud and Bounceleg were still talking.
“We're here. Start laying the borders,” Deadfire ordered. “Oh! I call the fern patch!” Bounceleg yelled. She ran over to the patch, and layed down the border. The others did the same. “Help!” Oakpaw looked down, and saw a little white and black tom. His fur was all stuck out, and had mud stuck to his pelt. “What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be with your mother?” Oakpaw stuttered. What was a kit doing so far away from his camp? Then he started crying. “Wha-what's the matter? What do you need help with?” Oakpaw asked, and wrapped his tail around Birchkit, trying to comfort him. “She...she was fighting this fox, and...and she told me to run, and find the clans! I didn't know where the clans were, but, I just ran. I was scared! Please, help my mother!” Birchkit wailed. Oakpaw turned. He scanned around, but the patrol was gone. Oh, StarClan! “Where is your mother?” Oakpaw asked the kit. I got to do this myself. “Over here,” Birchkit meowed. He ran deeper into TreeClan territory, into the forest. Oakpaw gulped, and followed Birchkit.
The longer Oakpaw followed the kit, the more yells, and growling he heard. Finally, Oakpaw ran into a clearing. A black she-cat was fighting this fox. She was pinned down, and the fox was about to bite into her neck. Birchkit was covered in tears. Leave my mother alone!” he screamed. Birchkit lunged at the fox. He landed with his mouth deep into the fox's neck. The fox staggered backwards, yelping in pain. The fox then shakes it's self, and Birchkit went flying off the fox. “Birchkit!” Oakpaw yelled, looking at Birchkit' motionless body. “No!” screamed the she-cat. As the fox turned to the she-cat, snarling, the she-cat swiped at it, claws unsheathed. Quickly, before the fox could regain balance, Oakpaw lunged at the fox, with claws unsheathed. His claws dug deep into the fox's flank. The fox screamed in pain, and tried to shake Oakpaw off.
Suddenly, a battle cry rang through the clearing. Wildfire with Sunflower, Barkfur, Leafstorm, and Grasspaw popped out of a bush. Wildfire sank his teeth into the fox's fur, trying to drag it. Oakpaw immediately let go of the fox's flank. Sunflower grabbed the fox's legs, trying to hold it down. Grasspaw ran to Birchkit. He poked the kit with his paws. To Oakpaw's relief, Birchkit groaned, and pushed Grasspaw away. Grasspaw picked up Birchkit, and ran over to Oakpaw. “You have to take this kit with her mother.,” Grass-paw’s voice muffled in Birchkit's fur,“TreeClan can't handle two more mouths to feed. We already have enough problems.” Leafstorm helped the she-cat up from the ground. He dragged her away from the fox, behind a bush. Oakpaw looked over to the brush, then at Grasspaw. “You have to. Please,” Grasspaw begged. “alright,” Oakpaw replied. Grasspaw nodded, and leaped on the fox, helping in the fight with his clanmates.
Quickly, Oakpaw picked up Birchkit. He wailed, protesting to be picked up. “Be quiet! I'm trying to save your life!” Oakpaw growl muffled in Birchkit's puffy fur. Birchkit moaned one last time before keeping quiet. Oakpaw ran over to the bush where Birchkit's mother was . “What do you want?” Leafstorm hissed. “RockClan would be gladly to take these cats in. Grasspaw told me that TreeClan already has enough mouths to feed, so I'll take them to my camp,” Oakpaw explained. “Oakpaw! Stop talking! It's tickling me!” Birchkit giggled softly. Leafstom just snorted before turning to the she-cat. “Nightfang. RockClan has offered to take you in. Sorry TreeClan can't take you in. Come on. Get up,” Leafstorm urged the she-cat to get up.
“Wheres, where my son! I can't leave without my son!” the she-cat wailed. “He's right here,” Leafstorm replied. Slowly, she got up. Nightfang looked around, and saw that Oakpaw was holding her son. “Thank you, kind one,” Nightfang thanked. “I haven't done anything yet. Follow me,” Oakpaw said. Chapter 7
He walked away from the fight. Nightfang quickly caught up with him. “Where are you from? Your name sounds like a clan name,” Oakpaw asked. “Oakpaw! Can I ride on your back! I promise to hold on tight, and I won't let go,” Birchkit asked before his mother could reply. Oakpaw rolled his eyes. “Of course Just let me put you down.” He gently put down the tom, and sat down. Birchkit bounced up and down, before running to Oakpaw's back. He got into the hunter's crouch. Wiggled a bit, and jumped on Oakpaw. Carefully, Birchkit climbed up. When he got into a good position, he said, “I'm ready!”
Oakpaw slowly got up, and started walking. “Um, I do come from a clan, but it's far away from here. I had to escape, because, my clan camp was attacked. I don't know if any of the other clans, or tribes helped us, but my mate told me to run, and that he'd follow me later. Nightfang replied. “Wait, there are other clans? And tribes? What are tribes?” Oakpaw asked. “Tribes are a group of cats who follow different rules, and don't go to StarClan when they die. They go to the Tribe of Endless hunting. Also, they have names completely different then ours, and stuff like leaders, and medicine cats, deputies, warriors, are different. Most clans don't like the tribes, but my clan, SilverClan, has made peace with one of the tribes, called Lightning in Darkness of Moon. Other clans have been attacking us, like NightClan and ShineClan,” Nightfang explained. “Oh, but, we did start the clan thing, right?” Oakpaw asked.
“Oh, yes. When some of your clans deny us kittypetts, or loners, we set up our own clan. See, Far away from this forest, is another forest, larger than this. The clans in there, are SilverClan, NightClan, and ShineClan, with two tribes, Lightning in Darkness of Moon, and Blazing Fire in Sun. Those two tribes started the tribes. Farther than that forest, is a lake, a big lake, that has five clans, and three tribes, the biggest cats settlement. The clans are LightClan, StormClan, DarkClan EchoClan, and CloudClan. The tribes are Wind Where Gust Flows, River Where Fish Swim, and Cave of Whispering Stones. As you cloud tell, their camp is in a cave. The last cat settlement is the smallest, which was just FireClan and SnowClan. Most of them have their original leaders, like FireClan has Firestar as the leader. You know. There has been massive wars between the tribes and clans, but, some try to find peace, a become allies,” Nightfang explained. “Wow, that is so amazing. We knew nothing about this. This will be a lot of news, but, the clans might want to stay out of this. You see, we've had some conflict ourselves,” Oakpaw said. He was astonished.
“Oakpaw! Who is this cat?' Oakpaw saw Stoneclaw with Goldenfur and Deadfire. “I-I found her fighting a fox, protecting her kits. She's from another clan, in a forest far from here. Her clans at war,” Oakpaw tried to explain. “What are you talking about? We are the only clans,” Stoneclaw growled. “No, that's no true! There are other clans. When you guys reject loners, we form our own clan, follow the warrior code, go to StarClan when we die, all that stuff! But, have a little difference in each cat settlement,” Nightfang hissed. Stoneclaw flinched. “Yeah! We're not lying! Why would we?” Birchkit said. He climbed on Oakpaw's head, and jumped down to face Stoneclaw. “Hi there, my name's Birchkit.” Stoneclaw stared down at the kit, then at Nightfang. “He's my kit. I know, he's a lot to handle, but I can do it,” Nightfang said the deputy. “Let me talk to Rockstar on this. But, in the meantime, you and your kit will be able to rest in the nursery. If you are hungry, then you may take something from the fresh-kill pile,” Stoneclaw ordered. “Wait, doesn't Rockstar decide on that?” Goldenfur asked.
“No, the deputy takes care of apprentice training, border, and hunting patrols, and the welfare of the cats,” Stoneclaw explained, “But, the leaders make the final decision.” “Oh,” Goldenfur said. She walked in the camp with Deadfire following. Birchkit bolted in, with Nightfang. Oakpaw went in after them, and Stoneclaw went in last. “Mom! Who's this weirdo?” As Oakpaw came in, Redkit was yelling for her mom. Honeyfur came running out of the nursery, and stared down at Birchkit. “Hi there, my name's Birchkit. I'm staying here for a bit, with my mom,” Birchkit squeaked. “Rockstar will explain later, don't worry. They're friendly,” Deadfire said to the queen. Honeyfur nodded., and just stared at Birchkit.
“Hi, there. My name's Honeyfur. Where's your mother?” Honeyfur asked. “She's probably going to get checked on by your medicine cat, right? You do have one?” Birchkit. Actually, we have two, and one of them is going to check on you, my friend,” Nighttail came out of nowhere, which usually happens. “Okay!” Birchkit bounced up and down. “You seem excited. You like the medicine cat?” Nighttail asked as he lead Birchkit to the medicine cat's den. “Yup! I want to be one. Feathershine teaches me a lot!” Birchkit said. “Feathershine? Who's Feathershine?” Nighttail asked. “She's SilverClan's medicine cat,” Birchkit replied.
