Re: images
A couple of handy things to remember:
Don't use https:// https will require you to log in to view the picture, be sure that you can see the picture without logging in.
Don't use pics on facebook: for the same reason, again copy paste the url you are about to submit between the tags and make sure you can view it even when not logged in.
Make sure the link ends on .jpg or .png, links from google are nice, but they are long and are filled with rubbish information the tags don't know, again, test before you submit.
So in short
Make sure you can see the picture without logging in somewhere.
Make sure the link you are submitting is ending on .jpg or .png indicating a file.

Re: images
I find it easy to use images from Google by instead of seeing the whole image, i would hover over the image and click "view image". These images are usually smaller then when you click on it and click on see full image.
You'll get a link that should look like this,
http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9 ... 7qfHJJFABx
http://images.free-extras.com/pics/a/apple-562.jpg
see the difference?
its usually small and isn't over sized. For example for one of my posts viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4680, i used the see full image instead of just view it.
my newer edited post image's are much smaller then the other on i did earlier, plus they work. I think >.>
