Jose Mujica

Postby Shadowstar1922 » 21 Nov 2014, 11:58

Jose "Pepe" Mujica is the president of Uruguay. He was elected in 2010 and hes pretty much a socialist. A flexible one, that is. He gave gay people rights and expanded women's rights. He took all power away from the drug cartels in his country by creating the first national marijuana market where the Uruguayan government grew healthy marijuana and sold it at lower costs. People turned to government marijuana that was less expensive, rather than buying expensive marijuana that was mixed with substances people wouldn't know about. President Mujica is a big supporter of keeping the environment clean, too. He also legalized abortions and reformed the health care system, and donates 90% of his salary to charities in the country. President Mujica lives on his own farm with his wife and 2 dogs, one of them only having 3 legs. He has also been very harsh on corporations caught with worker abuse, fraud, etc. and has practically kicked corporations out of government, taking away their influence in the electorate systems too. His socialist policies in redistrubuting wealth have been successful, for the middle class has grown signifigantly, with poverty rates going from 37% in 2010 to 11% in 2013. President Mujica is extremely pacifist. He once said to a roup of American University students that there were no "just wars" and constantly criticizes the militarization of the world. He is an intelligent man, too. He is amazing.

Here is a rad quote.

"My goal is to achieve a little less injustice in Uruguay, to help the most vulnerable and to leave behind a political way of thinking, a way of looking at the future that will be passed on and used to move forward. There's nothing short-term, no victory around the corner. I will not achieve paradise or anything like that. What I want is to fight for the common good to progress. Life slips by. The way to prolong it is for others to continue your work"

Apparently all he does is cool and all, but he is failing big time on security and education, the alpha and omega of a country

Yeah, its pretty sad that he didn't fulfil those promises. They're extremely important, but he has left a permanent mark on Uruguay. Lets hope the next guy can improve the security and the education systems.
