Charlie Sheen has confirmed the rumours that he is HIV-positive and revealed he had paid millions of dollars to blackmailers in an emotional tell-all interview.
Speaking with Matt Lauer on Today US, the 50-year-old actor revealed that he found out about his diagnosis around four years ago, which marked a "turning point" in his life. Watch the video above for his confession.
The former Two and a Half Men star said he's had to pay more than $10 million to a select few people who demanded payment to keep his personal secret.
The father-of-five is unsure as to how he contracted the virus and says he has informed every sexual partner of his status since then, so it is "impossible" he has transferred the virus.
The actor's doctor, Robert Huizenga, said the virus is "undetectable" in Charlie's system now as he is taking daily antiviral drugs.
Charlie penned an open letter before appearing on the show, detailing how his diagnosis sent his life spiralling out of control.
"The personal disbelief, karmic confusion, shame and anger lead to a temporary yet abysmal decent into profound substance abuse and fathomless drinking. It was a suicide run," Charlie wrote.
Charlie slammed the "desperate charlatans" who sought money from him during this vulnerable time in his life.
The trouble star hopes to "claim back my freedom" by going public with his news.
"I accept this condition not as a curse or scourge, but rather as an opportunity and a challenge. An opportunity to help others. A challenge to better myself," he concluded. "My partying days are behind me. My philanthropic days are ahead of me."
