NDM-1 Superbug

Postby Sylvia » 12 Aug 2010, 08:02

From the news:

A new superbug which is resistant to even the most powerful antibiotics has arrived in UK hospitals.

Experts warned the bacteria have the potential to spread rapidly around the world and ultimately render all the drugs typically used to fight infection useless.

The superbug is already widespread in India and Pakistan and patients going to these countries for medical treatment including cosmetic surgery have helped it spread to Britain, according to the scientists.

There have been around 50 cases in the UK so far, including one in Scotland last year.

The new superbug carries a gene called NDM-1 (New Delhi metallo-lactamase) that makes it resistant to carbapenem antibiotics, which are used on hard-to-treat infections that evade other drugs.

It is feared that NDM-1 could easily jump to other strains of bacteria that are already resistant to many other antibiotics and create dangerous infections that would be almost impossible to treat.

So far two types of bacteria have been host to NDM-1, both of which can cause urinary tract infections and blood poisoning.

Some of the patients seen in the UK have had mild symptoms while others were seriously ill.

Writing in the The Lancet Infectious Diseases medical journal, the researchers said: “The potential of NDM-1 to be a worldwide public health problem is great and co-ordinated international surveillance is needed."

What do you think guys? Will it kill us all? D:

The problem of resisting strains of viruses, bacteria will only go on and further.
With the use of antibiotics for even a slight cold, you both weaken the human natural defenses as strengthen the bugs.

......i have a theory about germs and whatnot
cleaning supplies. you know how it says it cleans 99.99% of germs? well what about the other .01% that must be the really tough germ. so if that grows we have this germ that will multiply makin more disease
lets see this new bug?
well i dont think it ill kill us humans have found ways to kill germs before.

Damn, it's coming, ZOMBIEZ. EGADS!!!! Well, like the zombie virus, our attempts to heal this virus are fruitless, it's impossible to cure, it's coming, and coming fast.....I'm scared.

First of all, Naming a virus with the name of a capital is disheartening for a person like me. I believe this is non-sense. Same applies to some virus named after Sao paulo, Superbug and all may sound scary, however, there are many viruses which are deadly enough to kill humans. you should accept it that medical tourism in the country where New Delhi exactly belongs to is on a increase. Many would prefer to acquire high classed medical facilities for a cheap rate. Yes, the virus/bacteria maybe harmful. But to the extent the medical council which has made it a hype and named it after new Delhi is absurd. Swine flu, was the virus spread like fire across the world, did countries name it after the country belonging to the American continent? No. HIV/AIDS, was it named after Africa? No. These were named according to the characteristics of the virus, same could have been done with this virus. I dont think it will kill us all. It was just made a hype by the certain group of scientists due to a certain reason.

make a bug that can weaken the nmd-1 strain protien and then make antibiotics ;)

aka. a weakest bug with protiens that conflicts with the nmd-1 protien
then you get immunity?
