As most people tend to exaggerate concerning nuclear energy.
Without searching it up (you'll ruin it that way) give me an estimate of how many people you think lost their lives in total since the chernobyl accident (till present day,people that lost their lives due to that accident).
Then an estimate of how many people lost their lives in the 3 mile accident,as well as how much radiation that accident released. Youll be amazed...

Answer:

On the chernobyl accident,exactly 64 (!!!!!!!!!!) people were killed up to date.
On the 3 mile accident,nobody was killed,and the radiation released was as harmful as a chest x-ray.

Kind of weird how people tend to make disasters such as these sound like WW3...

shadow actually, according to official reports (that i have read previously, having done several research projects on chernobyl) it is estimate that as a result of the accident, both directly and indirectly over 250,000 have been affected while the total death count is actually unknown however deaths directly linked with the accident itself and not the clean up response are 64 you are correct. however it can be estimated that nearly 100 rescue workers were killed in the effort to contain the radiation and the construction of the sarcophagus. Either you were only giving part of the information or you were refering to just the occurrence of the accident itself. as for 3 mile island, that was blown entirely out of proportion. it was never a meltdown, it only got to critical levels and the had to SCRAM the core. nothing bad really came of it.

Answering to that danny, there is a problem. You see,according to wikipedia, "A UNSCEAR report places the total confirmed deaths from radiation at 64 as of 2008"

But,also according to wikipedia,
"A Russian publication, Chernobyl, concludes that 985,000 premature cancer deaths occurred worldwide between 1986 and 2004 as a result of radioactive contamination from Chernobyl".

The thing is,the second part has not been confirmed whatsoever. Also,the publication is russian,so it's expected to exaggarate. A lot. Anyways,you see what i mean.

being honest, shad you are right if you take it literally. 64 people died of radiation...

but over a million would have died as a result of the accident and the consequences from it. poverty, people losing jobs, premature deaths, etc... it's a domino effect.

Sorry,but i rarely follow this line of thinking.
You see, if i use that method,i can come into two conclusions:
1) if i kill 1 person,im a mass murderer,as i kill all his possible children,grandchildren etc.
2) only disasters cause domino effects
This can easily be mistaken by many. Take the TV for example:did its creator even come close to imagining what influence it would have?
Everything that happens makes a chain reaction. Therefore,we can aswell say that the chernobyl accident could have not occured,but then the whole of today's world would be using nuclear energy... No?

shadow i was speaking of the russian report about their rescue crews. and it was somewhat exaggerated but given the levels of radiation expected at that site it would be quite obvious that the under equipped emergency crew would have been severely affected.
