I want to inform you all of the difference between disability and handicap, because, although many of you may think the difference is obvious there are people who either don't know because they haven't really thought about it or the ones that really bother me, those who are ignorant because they just flat out don't care.
Yes, I'm talking to you ignorant people specifically, but I want all of you to pay attention.
When most people hear the word "disability" the next thought is almost always "handicapped" or "retarded". That kid in your school who is in a special needs class because he has autism, guess what, they may be smarter than you. Ever think of that? So what does disability even mean, you might wonder. Let me put it this way. . . A disability is something that makes doing something other "normal" people would consider easy harder to understand or do for the person who has the disability. They can still do it, it just takes more time and thought and believe me, it can be very frustrating.
Now, someone who is handicapped is still NOT RETARDED.
That autistic child you go to school with? They just might be smarter than you when it comes to numbers because for some reason their disability makes it so. I don't know how, all I know is that many high-functioning autistic people/children are very smart when it comes to math.
That man in the wheel chair who can't seem to control his movements and makes noises that kids think are just soooo funny. If you could read his thoughts, I'm sure he could rip you a new one before you could make that rude remark. These people aren't mindless!
Now, having a disability does NOT make you handicapped. In fact, I have a "mental disability" but I don't pay much mind to it. Having a disability can only disable you if you allow it to. Those of us w/ disabilities didn't bring it on ourselves, but those of you out there who are ignorant and rude, THAT is certainly self caused.
So those of you who think its funny to poke fun at the "special" people: KNOCK IT OFF!

Re: Attention EVERYONE
OMG! FINALLY SOMEONE SAYS THIS!
I've been trying to explain that to so many kids in my class, since we have an austistic kid named Ryan. He's a bit slow, but when he gets it, he gets it good and he'll raise his hand a lot and he'll be liek I GOT A 100 or a 95 which he does.
But, sometimes he can be arrogant and use his autistic condition as an excuse and sometimes abuses his choices during class, like if he gets mad he can leave, and when he does get mad, he shuts everyone else off, refusing to learn anymore, which sucks in math because our math teacher doesn't care. He treats everyone equally. But the math teacher does lots of reviews so he gets it later xD
But anyways, thank you for clarifying this. Good job!

Re: Attention EVERYONE
I am just sick and tired of people's ignorance.
I'm glad to see that there are others who are willing to speak up about it now though
And although it may seem like he's doing it on purpose, he's most likely not trying to seem arrogant.
I scare some people when I'm un-medicated because I can get pretty weird and hyper and when you see a 19 year old acting like an 8 year old. . . yeah haha It's not that we try to be weird, in fact I really try to control my ADHD but sometimes it gets away from me.
So he may or may not do it on purpose, but most likely his autism gets in the way of him thinking for himself. Again, I'm no expert on Autism, so don't take my word for it, just keep in mind that he may not be trying to be rude.

Re: Attention EVERYONE
Yesterday I was approached by someone whose child had just been diagnosed w/ ADHD (shes 4) and the woman was telling me that her friends and family and the people around her kept telling her that "medicating is bad, don't do it".
So, I have decided that this is another issue to be shared w/ everyone, since what so many people are saying is WRONG.
Medication makes it so you can focus and so you aren't so hyper that you annoy everyone around you or do/say something w/out thinking that would offend people.
It is NOT bad to take medication for ADHD, however, you must make sure that you are being given the proper dosage.
I have been over medicated before and it basically turned me into a mindless zombie w/ no personality. I was always tired, I never felt like doing anything, and it pretty much made me feel depressed. The medication wasn't the problem, it was the crazy doctor who thought I needed to be "tranquilized" because he, for some strange reason, thought all people w/ ADHD need to be subdued.
Anyway, my point is: Medication is good as long as you are taking the right kind and in the right amount. So those of you who don't have ADHD and THINK you know better, here's some advice. Mind your own business, or at least get your facts straight! Thank you. . .

Re: Attention EVERYONE
In my class theres a girl with ADHD, but she's still an amazing friend. And then there's Max. He has autism. You might think its funny when he gets upset but it isnt. If you're one of those people that laugh at kids wih autism in the store. Get a life and maybe get some respect for the people around you!!

Re: Attention EVERYONE
To help out with this little post here is a bit more info, quite a few of the cases in which a person with autism is in fact smarter than you. Simply isn't just smarter than you. They are normally smarter than close to 99% or more of the entire population of the world. These people are known as Savants. And before someone tries saying something about this, savants are just smart, there are different types. The musically gifted, the artistically gifted, etc.
Re: Attention EVERYONE
So you see, having a "disability" does not make you "retarded". . .
Point proven, thank you
