Anyway yeah, awesome that same-sex marriage has been legalized, but why is government even involved with marriage?

They need to be identified as married throughout all government documents such as taxes and whatnot.

inequality is still an issue for people of different orientations, wherever, it's just that the US has taken a huge step and made gender-neutral marriage legal too

Woohoo! I went to a gay bar with friends affected by this ruling to celebrate. It was...an experience.
As for Alabama, my home state always finds a way to make me proud. Politicians are trifling like this because they want those crusty old social conservative votes. I know two or three kids my age who don't agree with the Supreme Court decision; everyone else thinks it's fantastic.
And regarding our government's participation in marriage, what the government did now was provide several entirely secular rights to a minority in our nation. Visitation rights for sick partners or the ability to file taxes jointly, for example.
 For trying.

Man, I love the gay bar! Lots of well-groomed, attractive gay men floundering around... who very rarely want to buy me drinks. Maybe you had more luck? I'm glad that the public of Alabama is on-par with everyone else. Hopeful those gabby old wrinklies will die off soon, and everyone can just get on with their lives

Considering the first country of the modern era to give legal protections, cohabitation rights, and advocate a society that allows gay people to come out openly was the USSR in 1918, it is about time the rest of the world is catching up, and it is about time America did it. yeah you did it, but almost 100 years after the first country did it.

i'm saying we're focusing on the wrong part here--that we did something good for once. instead we're all focusing on how we're late to the party
