i'm not a fan of people saying stuff like "it's about time" or that we're late to the party, because hell at least we've done it

Considering the first country of the modern era to give legal protections, cohabitation rights, and advocate a society that allows gay people to come out openly was the USSR in 1918, it is about time the rest of the world is catching up, and it is about time America did it.

yeah you did it, but almost 100 years after the first country did it.

i'm saying we're focusing on the wrong part here--that we did something good for once. instead we're all focusing on how we're late to the party

Judging from all the parties, celebration, and international praise the USA has gotten, I'm pretty sure many, many more people are focusing on the good rather then how late we are. A couple comments online about being late means nothing.
