Attention EVERYONE

I want to inform you all of the difference between disability and handicap, because, although many of you may think the difference is obvious there are people who either don't know because they haven't really thought about it or the ones that really bother me, those who are ignorant because they just flat out don't care.
Yes, I'm talking to you ignorant people specifically, but I want all of you to pay attention.
When most people hear the word "disability" the next thought is almost always "handicapped" or "retarded". That kid in your school who is in a special needs class because he has autism, guess what, they may be smarter than you. Ever think of that? So what does disability even mean, you might wonder. Let me put it this way. . . A disability is something that makes doing something other "normal" people would consider easy harder to understand or do for the person who has the disability. They can still do it, it just takes more time and thought and believe me, it can be very frustrating.
Now, someone who is handicapped is still NOT RETARDED.
That autistic child you go to school with? They just might be smarter than you when it comes to numbers because for some reason their disability makes it so. I don't know how, all I know is that many high-functioning autistic people/children are very smart when it comes to math.
That man in the wheel chair who can't seem to control his movements and makes noises that kids think are just soooo funny. If you could read his thoughts, I'm sure he could rip you a new one before you could make that rude remark. These people aren't mindless!
Now, having a disability does NOT make you handicapped. In fact, I have a "mental disability" but I don't pay much mind to it. Having a disability can only disable you if you allow it to. Those of us w/ disabilities didn't bring it on ourselves, but those of you out there who are ignorant and rude, THAT is certainly self caused.
So those of you who think its funny to poke fun at the "special" people: KNOCK IT OFF!
