An Indian toddler suffering a rare condition which caused her head to swell to three times the normal size is recovering well after receiving life-saving medical treatment.
Doctors in India have begun draining fluid from 18-month-old Roona Begum's skull to reduce the swelling caused by hydrocephalus, a rare condition also known as "water on the brain," The Sun reports.
The little girl's skull has so far been reduced from 91 centimetres to 73 centimetres and she is responding well to treatment, the newspaper reported.
The Fortis Foundation, which runs the hospital at which Roona is being treated, said she was "thriving".
Roona was discovered living with her parents Abdul Rahman and Fatima Khatun in a remote village in northeast India.
They did not have enough money to pay for medical treatment but after images of their daughter were published in The Sun newspaper, donations flooded in for assistance.
The toddler is now facing months of treatment and numerous operations.
There is a chance she may suffer blindness or brain damage as a result of the swelling but results have so far appeared positive.
