I know everyone has heard about how Target was hacked, and all of those little statistics and the like. So, I'm going to tell you guys how to be safe( 80-90% of this is common knowledge)
So here's a nice little statistic for you. Out of all the malware detected from back in 2012, the top most method were URLs(Java and Flash drivebys, along with other exploitations), and accounted for 1,393,829,795 different infections, totaling to 87.36% of all infections.
1.) Do not open links from people you do not know. Links can redirect to other pages without you ever being able to see what you clicked, installing malware in your system before you even realize it. This is known as a drive-by, normally exploiting Java, but other exploits have been popping up lately.
2.) Always have a firewall and antivirus. They will help protect you from (D)DoS attacks and malware.
(Please note that not all malware can be stopped. Hackers tend to use custom encryption, which makes it nearly impossible to detect until it's already too late. That's why you need to take precautions BEFORE you get infected)
3.) Be sure to have more than 1 password for your accounts. That way, if 1 account is breached, you don't lose everything. Also, in order to prevent your password from being bruteforced, try to keep it no lower than 6 characters, with a capital letter and 2 or more numbers.
Even by taking all of these steps, one isn't 100% protected. You should monitor your computer/network for any abnormalities to make sure that you aren't infected.
