Now, many people will have their many beliefs on what happened during this day. But, let me be clear, it doesn't matter whether you believe the media, the people who go against the media, or people who think it was a plot by the government. What matters is that many, MANY people lost their lives on this day. And sometimes we joke about this day because there have been so many memes and comedic videos or whatever. However, what we must not forget is that this day is full of grievance for many people across the country.
On this day, 2,996 people thought they were going to work. They thought that they were just going to get a day's work in and then they were going to go home to their families and enjoy a meal with them, talking about how their coworker was annoying or how they came up with the newest idea in their marketing campaign or what they heard on the news. 2,996 people thought they were living lives as normal. However, what took place was something that no one was prepared for. The United States was attacked on its own soil. 4 planes. 19 terrorists.
8:46 AM - Flight 11 crashes into the North World Trade Center
9:03 AM - Flight 175 crashes into the South World Trade Center
9:37 AM - Flight 77 crashes into the Pentagon
10:07 AM - Flight 93 crashes in Somerset County, Pennsylvania
In 1 hour and 21 minutes, the lives of many have changed. Many have already been lost because of the crashes and the South Tower collapse.
But, the one thing that happened that the terrorists didn't expect was that people of the United States didn't waver. They didn't give up and they may have ran at first, but they went back to help. The first responders were not at all alone. They had the help of thousands of Americans across New York. The citizens of New York and even New Jersey sought out to help evacuate as many people as possible before the inevitable happened. They weren't going to sit back and watch innocent lives be lost.
After the attacks, mourning set in as expected. A country-wide mourning took place to remember those who had their lives taken from them. But, what Isoroku Yamamoto had said in WWII is still relevant to this day.. "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve." The United States went into hyperdrive, getting back to work and many people finding their resolves. They wanted to make a statement. They wanted to make a statement that they weren't going to sit back and just let some terrorist group stop a united nation.
So, many joined the military because of this.. They wanted to make sure that every American was safe and that they had the right to "Play Ball". The Yankees and the Patriots made it to their respective championships. It is only fitting that these two teams make it to their championships. The Yankees lost and the Patriots won.. But, what a lot of people saw is that it is something that brought the country together... Even if it was for a few hours. There were no fears, there were no quarrels.
So, on this day, please remember those 2,996 lives lost and thousands upon thousands of lives who decided to help and even more who volunteered to sacrifice themselves as a result of this day. Let their spirits guide our resolve in making a better world and not just a better nation.
