Burkini ban should be law across France, Nicolas Sarkozy tells comeback rally

Postby Dr Frook » 26 Aug 2016, 04:38

I don't think this will help with anything... however I understand the sentiment. Should a christian visit a Muslim country, they would be expected to adhere to Muslim principles and cover up, with some pretty severe penalties if they do not comply. Why not reverse the situation and require Muslims to adhere to western values when they visit/move to a western nation, which has been built on the principles of Christianity.

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has said he would impose a nationwide ban on burkinis if elected back to the presidency next year.

Key points:
•Several seaside towns have already outlawed the full-body swimsuit known as a burkini
•Sarkozy says he refuses to "let the burkini impose itself in French beaches and swimming pools"
•Prime Minister Manuel Valls says his proposals are brutal

Hundreds of supporters waving French flags chanted his name and applauded as Mr Sarkozy — a conservative president from 2007 to 2012 — promised to protect France and positioned himself as a strong defender of French values and tough on immigration.

The former president voiced support for 15 French seaside towns that have moved to introduce a burkini swimsuit ban, which a tribunal ruled was "necessary, appropriate and proportionate" to prevent public disorder after a succession of jihadists attacks in France.

Taking a hard line on the debate that has agitated France over the past weeks, Mr Sarkozy told supporters at his first rally for the 2017 election in Chateaurenard, that the full-body swimwear should be banned throughout the country.

"I refuse to let the burkini impose itself in French beaches and swimming pools ... there must be a law to ban it throughout the Republic's territory," he said to applause.

"Our identity is under threat when we accept an immigration policy that makes no sense."

France's highest administrative court will decide on Friday whether to overturn the ban, after hearing a challenge from the Human Rights League and an anti-Islamophobia group.

Burkini ban reinforces stereotypes

Muslim women are portrayed as universally oppressed and in need of intervention from Western saviours, as Pina Sadar writes.

President Francois Hollande has said that life in France "supposes that everyone sticks to the rules and that there is neither provocation nor stigmatisation".

Prime Minister Manuel Valls on Thursday condemned any "stigmatisation" of Muslims, but maintained that the burkini was "a political sign of religious proselytising".

"We are not at war with Islam... the French Republic is welcoming [to Muslims], we are protecting them against discrimination," he told BFMTV.

Mr Sarkozy, 61, is seeking to win back votes from the far-right National Front, whose rising popularity mirrors that of populist politicians in other countries that have appealed to voter worries over globalisation and immigration, such as United States' Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and the leaders of Britain's Brexit campaign.

His popularity, which had already started improving with party sympathisers in June, rose after Islamist attacks on a Bastille Day crowd in Nice and on a priest in Normandy.

France firmly separates religion and public life and was the first European country to ban the wearing of the Islamic face veil in public in 2010.
