Another police shooting in the US

Postby Dr Frook » 22 Sep 2016, 03:49

Blargh...

this needs to stop... give police tasers and better training. The violent protests are not helping anything, and only making police more trigger happy. Stupid.

One person has been critically injured in the southern US city of Charlotte, city officials said, as protests against the killing of a black man by police turned violent for a second night.

The injured protester, who has not been identified, was initially reported to be dead by Charlotte's police chief Kerr Putney.

"Civilian who suffered gunshot wound during protests is on life support, critical condition. Not deceased," the Charlotte City Government said on Twitter.

Authorities had said earlier that the shooting was "civilian on civilian", and that police did not open fire.

This latest trouble began with a peaceful rally that turned violent after several hundred demonstrators marched through the city centre with brief stops at a black church, police headquarters and a large entertainment venue.

As they approached the city's central intersection, protesters began to surround groups of police cars and officers who were lining the road.

Witnesses said the protesters taunted riot police in front of a hotel, who responded by shooting rubber bullets, tear gas and flash-bang grenades to disperse the group.

The protesters then began hurling fireworks and debris at the officers outside the hotel.

During the confrontation, a man fell to the ground.

The witnesses said police then brought him into the hotel, leaving blood on the sidewalk.

Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts said the gunshot victim was taken to the hospital, but did not provide a name or other details.

"It was confirmed not to be a police officer," she told CNN, referring to the shooter.

"We're going to continue to try to get more of an update."

Some protesters banged on glass windows, others threw objects at police and stood on cars as police appeared to fire tear gas, prompting demonstrators to run.

"We are calling for peace, we are calling for calm, we are calling for dialogue," Ms Roberts said earlier in the day.

"We all see this as a tragedy."

Violence first broke out Tuesday night after police shot to death Keith Lamont Scott, 43, in an apartment complex parking lot earlier in the day.

It was the latest in a series of fatal police shootings of black men that have left the African American community demanding law enforcement reforms and greater accountability.
