Digital books - blessing or curse?

Postby Dr Frook » 13 Mar 2011, 00:07

I've been reading about libraries closing down now that digital books are starting to take over. What do you think about digital books? I personally like using them, but I hate the idea of losing libraries because of them. Do we need physical libraries anymore? I say YES!

Digital books are the future. Like the Ipods, they took out the CD.

It's always good to advance everything. But libraries shouldn't go out of business cause of this.
Middle-aged people, like 40 and above probally still go to libraries. This is for the college students who are too damn busy to stop by the school library. Or, who are too damn lazy to get off their fat asses and walk like 300 yards... ._.

I still go to libraries. Does that make me 40? I actually enjoy going to the library and checking out like 5 or 6 books at a time xD Big thick chapter books are my favorites, but only if they're GOOD books. I don't do boring books, or little 'The dog ate the mouse.' books. I enjoy books that start off with something like this:

'Karen's heart pounded as she raced through the swirling mist, the darkness enclosing her so that nothing could be seen. Her ice-blue eyes were wild with fear, and her hands were shaking as she reached for the only thing that was visible; a shining silver doorknob. She didn't know where this door would lead, or what it would bring. As long as I get out of here! she thought to herself. She took the freezing cold doorknob in her hands and turned it slowly. She took in a deep breath and pushed open the door.'

Yeah.. I could've made that a bit shorter..

Well, I'll tell you from a perspective of a student who is in his teens. You see, at times when your preparing for exams, its too cumbersome to buy books again and again. And you reach a certain stage when you need hell lot of material to practice. So, if you found the same practice material online in the form of a e-book, it's free and if you are seriously interested in the material and nothing else, then you do feel like heaven. However, too much of this can spoil your eyes and there are disadvantages too. I agree to FWG that the libraries shouldn't be shut down. It would be good to have physical libraries which provides you the traditional study atmosphere.

CURSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I abosolutely love the smell of paper, especially in books, new and old! One thing, the digital books: YOU. DON'T. TURN. THE. PAGE. The whole novelty of the book is feleing the orughness of the paper on your skin, and seeing the words without the book's battery dying! That's a thing, too: With proper care and love, a book never loses its battery! All people who read digital books are just too stupid to appreciate REAL books!

Thank you,
