The elixir of Life?

Postby Sylvia » 02 Nov 2009, 15:48

A pill being tested on diabetics has been dubbed the elixir of Life.

This pill, used to control blood sugar levels, has been shown to increase the amount of AMPK, a chemical used to slow the ageing process. AMPK production has increased from 20% to 50%.

IMAGINE THAT! I COULD LIVE TO BE 200 YEARS OLD!

I dont think there is a elixir of life...

the cells of the human body grows older and older and dies - that how it works...
when too many cells die ---> Necrosis or aging.

Maybe it could extend the appearance of aging, but you can't stop the real thing.
One theory of aging says that when cells divide, telomeres (correct me if I'm wrong, my bio's rusty) are split in half (one to each new cell) and a small amount is lost. Over time, the telomeres grow shorter and shorter until cell replication gets wacky, and your organs start failing etc. , so you die of old-age. Another theory is that free-radicals damage cells throughout your life-span, until cells are too damaged to function properly, which leads to death from old-age.
To prevent death from old-age, you'd need to "fix" these processes, a task which seems impossible. Until then, we can just focus forming more efficient healthcare systems to raise the average lifespan.

This is a bad idea on my part. Living that old isn't that fun. And, the companies who made this are gonna be trillionaires.

So, nah, I don't agree. And Sylv being 200, shocker...

I like to look at the process of aging like Rorshark from the Watchmen looks at life.
Black and White.

However my hope's for living untill 300000 years old is in nanobiotic's and general philosophy. That way, I might get to become a Cyborg.

nanobots are the key to immortality. They will fix defects in the human body and reverse the aging process. It is only a matter of time. No need for pills, leave the work to the teeny weeny tiny bots!

tiny robots, indeed it is.... and someday, i'll make a remote that'll hack their internal memories and make them consume your flesh starting from your inner body until they reach you outer skin and there will be nothing left... >.>
