You blew out the candles on your birthday cake, and your family cried out a hearty happy birthday. “You should open the card.” Your mother said eagerly. Although the card wasn’t that big, you still struggled to get the envelope open. After you ripped the envelope into pieces, you were greeted with a man. This man wore a rooster costume. He stared at you, and you stared back. The old black and white photo of the man in the rooster costume looked so grim. Due to the high contrast of the picture, the costume didn’t have much visible detail, but you could tell it was well crafted. He seemed so out of place, and the confused expression plastered on his face helped prove this point.
You asked what the picture meant. Although they made it clear that they heard you from the way they stared, your parents said nothing. You asked why it was on the front of your birthday card, and still no one replied. After a minute, you got your answer.
“We thought you’d like it.” Your mother replied, and then she frowned. “Do.. Do you not like it?”
“Actually..” You started to say, before you paused for a moment to think about the picture. Something about this picture made you feel secure, probably that the man was just as confused as you were, and for that reason you responded happily. “I like it a lot.”
