I don't like guns.

I reckon they should be banned all over the joint.
Unless they're licensed for hunting.

Speaking as someone who's almost been shot before...

Well, if you're a freak that doesn't know how to use a gun, then yes, they should be banned from you. But if you're trained well and know exactly how to use and take care of a gun, then no, you should be able to have a gun for your own protection from the ones who steal guns and run around crazily shooting, or to protect yourself from robbers, or to protect yourself from a rabid dog, or wild bear... there are many many things. Yes, I know, I know there are other weapons besides guns that could be used, but guns are a hell of a lot easier sometimes.

I'm reminded that I should be getting over it.

Wait, so I'm a freak for not knowing how to use a gun, or wanting to know how to use a gun? That's ridiculous.

And I suppose you've had to fight off wild bears, rabid dogs, insane people and robbers on a frequent basis? This is what I mean about legislation. If you live or work in an area where you're likely to get attacked by a wild bear then yeah, you should be licensed to have a gun, but for dealing with robbers?

That suggests it's ok to kill someone for stealing from you.
It also puts you in the place of the judge, the jury and potentially the executioner, which goes against a fair legal system, at least over here.

Sure, there are occasions where a gun would come in handy, but to say that the victims of a Columbine could have prevented it had they carried a gun implies that it's their fault they were killed, which is an outrageous viewpoint.

Think also of all the kids, women, and men who are needlessly killed due to irresponsible gun usage.
I'm pretty sure that it would outnumber those victims of situations where guns are one of the only solutions.

Carrying a gun also makes you more likely to get shot, as carrying a knife makes you more likely to be stabbed over here.

I like to think that society, by in large, has reached a level of civilization that we do not need to carry weapons around, especially when those weapons are for no other purpose than to potentially do others great harm.

And trust me, when you think you're going to be shot, you'd kind of like tighter gun laws.

(This should probably be moved to the serious discussion section)

I think society has NOT reached that level. In fact, there are way more people out there looking to kill than there used to be. And no, I wasn't saying 'you're a freak for not knowing how to use a gun', I'm saying the murderers out there who don't know how to use a gun but act like they do by killing people shouldn't have guns. And no, you don't meet those things every day, but people who do might want a gun handy just in case. What I'm saying is, guns shouldn't be banned, because SOME (and I say SOME) people need them in their situations. Now yes, bad things happen with guns, but almost anything can be used as a weapon and do just as much damage as a gun! Besides, if you ban guns, SOMEONE'S going to find a way to get one SOMEHOW, and then they'll start circulating, and then we'll have the same problem all over again.

And yes, this probably should be moved.

I can understand both points of view.
Now munt, I have to say that the handgun ban in the UK has actually led to a higher crime rate overall with alot more violence everywhere in the UK.
Obviously it's not all due to the handgun ban, but it is significant.

I'm also of the opinion that everyone that meets strict requirements should be able to own a gun.
Reasons for ownership should include:
Collecting (museums and private collections)
sports
hunting
certain security personnel

Mind I do not believe that owning a gun for self defense is a good idea, I'm not an american.

Strict requirements:
A clean criminal record.
Some evidence that you are indeed practicing shooting as a sport, hunt, collect or that you need it for your work.
Passing a theoretical and practical exam, showing that you are aware of the gun laws AND can operate it safely.
All guns to be registered

Personally I would also like to see a public opinion with a clear distinction between legal and illegal arms and a better focus on fighting crime and illegal guns.

thats the law in england, you cant have a criminal record (has exceptions), you need to supply a good reason, dont need to pass an exam, and all guns are registered

also; guns shouldn't be banned, a ban wouldnt even do anything, think how theres over a billion guns from as early as the 1800s still somewhere in the world, if the production of guns stopped people can get a hold of all these old guns pretty easily, not to forget how guns are really easy to build, meaning even if guns are out of production people are still gonna have 'em, itll just make them rarer, like woof said, everything can be used as a weapon, so if you stop guns so someone cant shoot you, they can easily stab you or club you round the head with something, what ya gonna do, ban baseball aswell?
