US man awarded $21.5 million after hit by a sliding door

Postby Dr Frook » 13 Nov 2015, 18:36

O M G seriously? Man I wish I was hit by a sliding door like that.

An Illinois man has been awarded $29 million dollars after he was hit in the head by a sliding door on a cruise ship and suffered a minor brain injury.

James Hausman was captured on CCTV footage being struck in the head by a sliding door when aboard the Holland America cruise ship.

A US District Court jury in Seattle awarded Hausman $29 million in damages including $22 million in punitive damages against Holland America, the Seattle Times reports.

In the footage, the sliding door fails to pick up Housman and smacks the side of his head; he grasps the injured spot immediately checking for blood.

The ship’s doctor initially stated Hausman suffered a facial contusion and chipped tooth and later diagnosed a concussion and ‘post-concussion’ syndrome.

According to Hausman’s attorney, Rick Friedman, a neurological test showed he suffered a minor traumatic brain injury and now suffers from vertigo and seizures.

Evidence produced during the trial also revealed dozens of other passengers have been injured in similar sliding-door incidents due to faulty sensor settings across the Holland America fleet.

Mr Friedman argued the doors were set to open and close faster than normal to save money on air-conditioning.

Holland America denied the allegations and refused to comment on the specifics of Hausman’s lawsuit.

Alright, I'll admit I thought it was funny until I read the story.
I think this man has a right to sue. I mean, he was injured pretty badly right? Or at least that's what the lawyer says (I don't really trust lawyers).
At least he isn't suing over burning himself with a hot cup of coffee. I mean, some people have no common sense at all!
But back to this guy.
The door gave no warning that it was going to close, and it did hit him pretty hard.
Perhaps the cruiseline should have a lock system for when they have so many people coming through at a time so the doors don't close on people like that?

This is what one million dollars looks in ten dollar notes.

Times that by twenty five point one and you probably have enough money to make a sliding door out of ten dollar bills

Yes, he is suing for a ridiculous amount, I'll give you that.
But do you realize how expensive medical bills can be?
You're not only charged for the hospital stay, surgery, and medicine you are given while in the hospital, but EVERY "doctor" that so much as steps in to your room or asks you a question, can send you a bill for their "services" to you.
My most recent procedure cost us close to $200 and if the insurance had refused to help us out, we would have been paying close to $2000.
I didn't even stay over night in the hospital. I was in and out within 3 hours.

Just to clarify, I'm not justifying this guys decision to sue for that much money.

if this had happened in Australia - there would never have been a lawsuit and if by some really really strange occurrence someone did get sued, it would be for max 10s of thousands of dollars... and that would be a stretch. I can never understand why in the US everyone sues for so much money for so little things. In australia, people accept that accidents happen and then move on.

That is a very good point...
American's are really self centered. . . Can I move to Australia? I think I would be a happier person there. I mean for one, Chris Hemsworth is there, but also, less money hungry people. YAY!

Just go and find the nearest sliding door in a Wallmart and then use the millions you sue off of them to fly all the way there
