Your Thoughts On: Music Pirating

Postby Wow_Give_Up_On_Life » 02 Mar 2011, 02:02

I personally think that music pirating is the main reason for all these terrible movies that are being made at the moment. It takes a domino out of the chain, the domino being money and the chain being quality.

So what do you think?

I don't think the bad movies are related to pirating - more likely just poor imagination or lack of new ideas. You don't need a lot of money to make a great movie and a lot of money does not necessarily make a great movie.

that said, pirating is nothing more than theft, but extremely hard to stop, even though it is theft on a grand scale.

what are you talking about?
Bad movies? Never seen so many great movies coming out in Belgium in my life.
Sure they're all Belgian productions I'm talking about.

About one thing you're right...Hollywood productions are simply bad.
I haven't seen any good Hollywood production in years, maybe 1 movie a year that stands out a little.

Piracy has always been there, I remember I used to make my own mixtapes from the radio. It's easy, you put your 8-track tape in, you listen to the hitparade, record the songs you want, done.
Tired of it, record over it. (BTW: this IS LEGAL, you pay for the right to listen to the radio already)

Lend a friends vinyl record and recording it on tape, fun too.
Then CD's recording on tape.
Then (much later) recording the CD onto a CD you could make yourself.

Now technology has evolved and mp3 has been here for about a decade and a half.
Which makes it easy to download.
In some countries even with intellectual property you can legally download (holland).
In all countries with intellectual properties you cannot at all legally upload.

And then there are certain countries who simply do not recognize intellectual property and/or take no action against piracy. (China)

Personally, I don't think there's much wrong with a little bit of piracy.
The music and movie industry makes a lot of money still, even after about 15 years of grand scale piracy. And in the 90s it was pretty bad and they lost millions of dollars. untill they finally realised that it was something to actually take an opportunity with instead of fighting it.
Napster became a source of legally downloading music, Itunes and youtube came; yes for every song you listen to (VEVO) on youtube the music industry makes money
thanks to the advertisements on that site.

And when people really like music, they just buy the record....online, sometimes in the form of mp3.
Piracy made the music industry more efficient and more to what the people want.
Yet still, even today, the artists that actually make the music only receive so little of what you pay for it in any shop, online or real.
Most of the profit goes to the music companies and they're still making millions.

I'm gonna have to say that some of the very best movies I have ever seen have been low budget or indie films George A Romero is a perfect example of this The man made the Zombie movie to start all zombie movies on a hand held camcorder...genius.

Music Pirating has it's negatives for the artists & record companies sure but a lot of a bands income comes from the touring they do & Merchandise they sell other than the records granted Touring has become more demanding since sales are lost to piracy but then again that's the lifestyle they signed up for when they wanted to make it big

my personal rule is I only download songs by artist who are either:

a) Already richer than anyone needs to be
b) Dead

You do need to support emerging artists I think. Although I'm probably saying that cause I hope to be an 'emerging artist' one day.

In the UK, we had an artist called Lily Allen.

She was alright, I listen to her a little - she quit the music industry because of the amount of pirating her singles/album had.

Also, in Ireland I think that ISPs check the downloads of internet users, and people can be banned for life from the internet depending on severity of the piracy.
